polly mellen

polly mellen is interviewed this month by nicolas ghesquiere (!!!) in interview.  she is one of the most iconic american fashion editors of all time, and worked under carmel snow and diana vreeland at harper's bazaar during the magazine's heyday as the most artistically-inclined of the glossies.  she followed vreeland to vogue later, but she is most well known for her incredible working relationship with some of the greatest fashion photographers: from helmut newton and irving penn to stevens meisel and klein and especially with richard avedon.
the first three photographs above are of the most well known as styled by mellen.  from top to bottom: lisa taylor, photographed by helmut newton; nastassja kinski, photographed by richard avedon; verushka, photographed by richard avedon.  the last photograph is a famous party picture of mellen with perhaps the biggest supermodels of all whose careers she almost wholly responsible for launching: linda evangelista, naomi campbell, and christy turlington.

pastoral life

i'm loving the distinctly scandinavian boho vibe here.  though i suppose it would be seeing as this is from elle sweden, shot by a swedish photographer (magnus magnusson), and of a swedish model (frida gustavsson).

november vogue x 2

two amazing november covers of paris and australian vogue.  the accessories for both really make it: abbey lee's ring (well, really all her jewellery) and natasha poly's feathers.  oh, and two sets of blue eyes done in very different ways.

toronto fashion week

toronto fashion week kicked off yesterday and holt's gave it a nice little boost on opening night with a canadian-only show.  9 designers showed, above are some highlights.  from top to bottom: Line (1 and 2), Pink Tartan, Smythe, Denis Gagnon, Mikhael Kale.  it all makes me pretty damn proud to be a canadian, i must say.  i just wish i could be back in toronto to see it all in person.

beats and feet

this music video, sent to me by a friend, combines old (mostly dance) footage, with retro jazz-inspired beats by tony junior and nicolas nox.  somehow, the recycled images are so much more exciting than the usual.  that, and the dancing is waaaaaay more impressive.  i think i've watched 20 times in the past 2 days.

serious length

if only i could find a floor-length skirt that made me look so long and lean.
