pop lite

the above is a film by Kinga Burza for Kate Spade New York, shot in London (yes London, not New York, which is typically Spade's one and only urban lover).  it's very cutesy, but i like it; probably mostly because the girl is doing things i want to be doing right now, like eating cake for breakfast and scrap booking and playing the ukulele (which i've never played in my life) and having bad poetry written about me on a typewriter.  it all sounds a lot better than writing the job applications and scene analyses (film studies woohoo!!) i'm (supposed to be) working on right now.  i'm such a good student!

nautica

i've recently come to notice that i have far too many blue-and-white striped pieces in my own closet (sweaters, t-shirts, shorts, skirts...).  suffice it to say, this Vogue Nippon editorial is doing it for me.

dior drama

i am not the floral-and-ruffle type when it comes to dressing myself, and i have yet to wear a dress that sweeps the ground.  the gowns of that closed Dior couture, however, look like the fairytale fantasies of my childhood, which were fed by Irving Berlin musicals and Eliza Dolittle and the ever-present Cinderella.  if i could wear (and pull off) a ball gown like these, my life might just be complete.

(in other couture/cinema news: Pedro Almodovar has been sitting front row at a number of shows including Dior and Chanel.  i don't think i know of a better man to put couture on celluloid.)

oslo love letter

Yvan Rodic of The Facehunter was in Oslo last week and posted documentation on his visual diary (which, by the way, is super-cool and deserves a good look).  i lived in Oslo for six months last year--my little room at the University was actually the birthplace of this blog--and i've been missing it a lot recently.  Rodic's photographs have the effect of pounding my nostalgia into the pit of my stomach.  Oslo is a truly modern European city: full of art, young and (very) beautiful people who look enviably cool all the time, and yes, hotdogs, maybe the only cheap food available.  at this time of year, Oslo's daytime hours are made up of a perpetual half-light--the sun rises late and sets early, as in at 4 o'clock, and with winter solstice, even earlier.  these photographs have me yearning for a return trip.  actually, all of Rodic's entries are giving a serious case of wanderlust.

inspire me

art, fashion, books: the basis of my (personal) cultural understanding.  the above are photographs taken in the closet of Karla Martinez, fashion market and accessories director at W.  hop on over to The Coveted to check out the closets of other industry insiders, including Canadians Fiona Green of FLARE and John Gerhardt of Holt Renfrew.  if you're anything like me and/or share these inspirations, the title of the blog will ring true: you will covet everything.

the suburbs

the above is a (music video version) preview of scenes from the suburbs, a film by spike jonze in collaboration with montreal band the arcade fire.  the video here is at once hauntingly familiar and horrifying.  the film is premiering at the berlin film festival in february.  here's hoping the band will be quick to bring it back to canada.

awakening

it is absolutely freezing in montreal these days--so cold that i only leave my apartment in necessity, and then run/trot where ever it is i'm going (i'm trying to keep it within a five block radius).  this editorial of elisa sednaoui for elle italia has, for some reason, reminded me of the amazingness of early spring (even though, upon second look there's not much spring going on).  give me damp grass, pale green sprouts from moist, black earth, and a pair of light, roughed-up jeans please!

chanel in shanghai

chanel is one of the most influential and well-known brands in the world.  while reaching world-dominating status, however, the company has remained close to its roots, and with lagerfeld's guidance, continues to be the first world in fashion artistry.  a new exhibition at the MOCA shanghai examines chanel's past, connecting couture with art, photography, and coco herself.  art imitating life, or life imitating art?

christina ricci depicted in the way any dramatic actress should, especially one who's played wednesday in the adaams family.  this is from a 2004 edition of POP, shot by mert & marcus.  it was styled by katie grand (before she founded one of my personal favourites LOVE).
